Apple iPhone users who have the new iOS 5 operating system are still experiencing the battery life problems despite the release of the iOS 5.0.1, the fix to the bug affecting some battery life of iPhones.
Apple website’s message boards were once again full of complaints from frustrated users who saw no changes brought by the supposed fix for the battery problems. The reviews and complaints by iPhone users started appearing after the release of the iOS 5 and the new iPhone 4S.
A spokesperson for Cupertino, California’s Apple talked about the issue in a statement released on Thursday saying, “The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues.”
A previous controversy in Apple’s products was the “Antennagate” issue where the iPhones would lose signal or get cut off in calls when the hand or fingers touches the iPhone in certain areas. Apple gave away freebies to please their customers and came up with a software to fix the issue. The iOS software is what runs on Apple’s products like the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
Apple acknowledged the problems to the iPhones battery life saying, “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS5 device. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” Apple however still failed to talk about the causes of the problem.
One iPhone user has complained about the battery life getting worse after the update which contained the supposed fix was installed. Others claimed a 10% loss on battery life every hour.
Apple’s iOS devices are responsible for two-thirds of Apple’s sales. At the U.S. trading, Apple’s shares went down 0.2% ($384.62) and have been going down in the three trading days that passed.
Apple to fix iOS5 battery bug
Posted 104 days ago byBugs in the iOS5 operating system of many iPhone 4S and older iPhone models have finally been acknowledged by Apple. Apple is promising to fix the problems brought by the iOS5 to the iPhone’s battery life in a few weeks.
A developer from an Australian app company, Mathew Peterson shared the iOS5.0.1 to other developers to help fix the problem. After testing if the issue is really fixed, the solution will then be made available to public.
Reports from people who updated their iPhone’s OS to iOS5 revealed a significant loss of battery life. Many iPhone 4S’and older iPhone models noticed a 19% drain in their phones battery within 50 minutes. A 10% loss was also noticed even when the phone wasn’t being used and even with many features turned off.
Even a staff member in an Apple store in Sydney didn’t have ideas so as how to fix the problem until such time solutions began appearing online. A lot of iPhone users have shared both their frustrations and solutions in online forums.
Some found a solution by turning off Location Services’ functions and notifications. Many have found that if the “Setting Time Zone” wasn’t disabled, the phone kept on checking the user’s location in servers even when deemed unnecessary.
Though turning off this iPhone feature settled the problem, lots of users still complained as to why they’d have to restrict their phone’s features for it to function as it was advertised.
Apple talked about the issue in a statement although failing to clarify what the bugs were, saying, “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS5 device. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.”
The battery life issue was just like the iPhone 4 “antennagate”, a condition where the phone’s reception got problems due to the electrical connection which was made every time the hand or fingers or hand touches the external antennas. Calls tend to drop out because of antennagate.
The iPhone’s bugs or problems might be due to not testing a product in environments outside that of laboratories. Apple’s has been very secretive of their upcoming products.
Updates of any solution of the iOS5 bugs will be shared over-the-air, straight to the consumers’ iPhone handsets.

iPhone 5 Fault Parts May Hampen Release Date
Posted 152 days ago byReporting today is news that one of the iPhone 5 manufacturers, Wintek, is finding a ‘delayed bubble’ fault in some of the iPhone 5 panels it is producing. The fault appears during assembly, the source claims, and not in a completely assembled unit, generally as these faults are detected during quality analysis. Wintek is reported to be providing around 20-25% of the panels for the iPhone 5 with Apple using several different manufacturers in the manufacturer of parts, components, and final assembly and testing. There is speculation that this may effect the level of units available at launch though Wintek refute this. Generally the panels are quicker to manufacture than other components so there would be a level of fault, resulting in the faulty parts being destroyed, that could be tolerated before having a critical affect on supply. Additionally there is no news whether this just pertains to one batch of parts or all batches since manufacture began. As has been reported in the past, and confirmed by one of Apples largest manufacturers Foxconn, Apple parts can be extremely difficult to make, especially with Apples zero tolerance approach to even the slightest amount of non-specification results. Apple has not commented on this speculation so confirmation can not be guaranteed, and Apple is reported to still be highly confident of shipping over 25 million units at launch. A special event by the tech heavy weight is due on October 4 which is being treated as the official release of the iPhone 5. As of yet a guaranteed Australian release date is waiting to be released.
iPhone 5 Release Australia
Posted 154 days ago byThe biggest news today to set the blogger sphere alight is the news of an October 4th release date for the iPhone 5. The iPhone 4 was met with much speculation with the reported issues pre-launch, however the iPhone 5 appears to have none of these issues reported at the moment. New Apple Executive Tim Cook has been apparently referenced in stating this date for the iPhone 5 release. The new iPhone model will be a critical point for Apple as the tech heavy weight faces mounting pressure from Android based phones, RIM restructuring it’s efforts, and also additional patent lawsuits that may disrupt worldwide distribution. Additionally, issues at the Foxconn plant, which is reported to be ramping up production to over 150,000 iPhone 5s each day, could create a back order list and not allow the sales to reach full potential. As always time will tell, however Apple does generally have a reputation of getting releases right and this will be a good test of Apple releasing the product with the new XO Tim Cook at the helm. No word on an Australian release date as of yet.

iPhone 5 Release NFC Chip Payments
Posted 206 days ago byApple is rumoured to be including a Near Field Communication chip in their new iPhone 5. This allows communications for up to 10cm away (much like Mastercard’s tap and go system) between the iPhone 5 and a supported device. Not only for accepting payments, a NFC chip also paves the way for additional communications between the iPhone 5 and supported devices as well as other iPhone 5s. As always this is still rumour and no official word from Apple yet.
NFC facilitates the transmission of data over a range of approximately 10cm. An NFC-enabled chip in a mobile phone can interact with a proximity card reader to make mobile payments.
Speaking at an Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) briefing this morning, the two founding members of user experience and research firm Mobile Experience discussed both the possibility of Apple partnering with PayPal for mobile payments and the possibility of the Cupertino giant going it alone.
Rod Farmer of Mobile Experience said that a potential partnership with PayPal for iPhone-enabled NFC payments has the possibility to be as, if not more, successful than Google’s Wallet product, which has been created in partnership with Citibank and MasterCard.
“[An Apple-PayPal partnership] offers the shortest path between two points for a consumer in terms of spending. You don’t have to worry about merchant banks [and] you don’t have to worry about the network … there are fewer mouths to feed, there are fewer existing relationships that need to be altered,” Farmer said.
He added that Google Wallet’s current partnership with MasterCard could present a problem in future, as Google may have aligned itself with a potential competitor that continues to “aggressively” grow its market share in the contactless card market.
However, Farmer’s colleague and co-founder of Mobile Experience, Oliver Weidlich, thought that Apple would likely go it alone if it equipped an iPhone with an NFC chip.
“I actually don’t think Apple needs PayPal. They’ve got 200 [million] credit card-enabled iTunes accounts. They can just bypass [PayPal],” Weidlich said.
There is still no guarantee that the iPhone 5 would even have an NFC chip built-in, but if the iPhone 5 was released sans-NFC, PayPal itself has previously said that the payment technology would be unlikely to reach critical mass for consumers.
“You need that first trigger for [retailers and merchants] to follow,” said Laura Chambers, PayPal’s director of mobile.
The inclusion of NFC in a device like the iPhone would make the technology mainstream, and lead to a wider take-up in the merchant and retailer space, Chambers added.
Rumours now place the iPhone 5 on track for a September release in the US.

iPhone 5 Release Data Australia
Posted 223 days ago byWhether you have an iPhone 4 or still have an iPhone 3 and awaiting an upgrade the iPhone 5 release data for Australia will be a welcome notice. We spoke to an Optus rep a few weeks ago who was mentioning a September release which we were a little hesitant to accept. As it now turns out the iPhone 5 (not it’s likely release name) is still in final development and testing phase and is not ready for release in the interim. Additionally Apple are likely wanting to see how the multiple law suits that are currently in action pan out and how this will affect their current and new products. There are rumours though of an iPhone 4s upgrade to bridge the gap before Apple’s next new model is released. Evolution or revolution? Time will tell.
Shadow Internet US Financed
Posted 255 days ago byThe New York Times said today the covert effort also includes attempts to create independent cellphone networks inside foreign countries.
The operation involves a fifth-floor shop on L Street in Washington, where a group of young entrepreneurs are fitting deceptively innocent-looking hardware into a prototype “internet in a suitcase”, the report said.
Financed with a $US2 million ($1.9 million) State Department grant, the suitcase could be secreted across a border and quickly set up to allow wireless communications over a wide area with a link to the global internet.
The Times said some projects involve technology being developed in the US while others pull together tools that have already been created by hackers from the so-called liberation technology movement.
The State Department is financing the creation of stealth wireless networks that would enable activists to communicate outside the reach of governments in countries like Iran, Syria and Libya.
The US Government has also spent at least $US50 million ($47.2 million) to create an independent mobile phone network, for iphones etc. in Afghanistan using towers on protected military bases inside the country, according to the newspaper.
It is intended to offset the Taliban’s ability to shut down the official Afghan services, the report said.
